The Name and Spirit of Schoßrinn
Arrival in the Prien Valley
From the small parking lot, there’s no sign of the Schoßrinn Waterfall yet. But its powerful roar is impossible to miss. From here, it’s just under a kilometer on foot. The path shifts with every step—beginning in open meadowland, then winding into denser forest, across moss-covered stones, through cool ravines. Long before you actually see the waterfall, you already feel its mist on your skin.

The climb to the photo spot leads over wet, rocky, and slippery terrain. Not entirely without risk. The next challenge: it feels as though you are standing in the rain. My gear is weather-sealed, yet the lens could truly use windshield wipers. The Schoßrinn plunges more than 70 meters into a round basin of rock. That’s where my model was standing—seemingly unfazed, yet striking a beautifully composed pose.
Two women were watching us—not curious, but knowing. Later, they told me this waterfall had never been just a tourist destination. It is, they said, the womb of the earth: a place of renewal, cleansing, and release. A mythical power place, especially for women.
A Waterfall with Myth and History
Declared a natural monument early on, the Schoßrinn has been regarded as a power place for centuries, particularly for women. They came here seeking healing, drawing new strength, or asking for fertility. Legends tell of nymphs dwelling in the spray, and of water that gives back more than it takes.
